Yoga
Thanks to a simple analogy it is quite simple to understand the philosophy in which yoga supports and develops its work. As a wave in the sea carrying itself the entire ocean potentially and when it breaks losing its individual characteristics so that it returns to the ocean as water which it is and always has been, so also man is in his relation with the Universe. The understanding of man as an integral part of the cosmos, his spiritual, mental and physical unification and reintegration into the cosmic ocean is the way that yoga offers.

The tradition of teaching that we follow in "Casa Hanuman" is based on a long tradition of teachings, which has been transmitted in form of human chain from guru to disciple over the centuries, thus reaching our times. According to tantric tradition, hatha yoga was originally conceived in 12th century by a Hindu sect, the nathas. All the ancient books that arrived to our times and which underpin the practice of hatha yoga in both east and west, books like Hatha Yoga Pradipika, Gheranda Samhita, Shiva Samhita among others, were developed by the schools of nathas. It is stated in academic and cultural Indian environments that a book, Yoga Korunta, was the first treatise written about Hatha Yoga. This book was lost somewhere in the transition during centuries. However, the legend that surrounds it says that Krishnamacharya, the guru of the great masters of our century, remained in a deep mystical trance while his ancestor, natha Muni, appeared and revealed to him this book. According to the legend this book, Yoga Korunta, contains the original method prescribed by Patañjali, the encoder of Yoga system, in the first writing about yoga "Patañjali yoga sutras", three centuries before Christ. Krishnamacharya was the guru of Pathabis Jois, Iyengar, Desikachar among other great Masters of contemporary times, and we at "Casa Hanuman", following the roots of the Yoga tradition, choose to practice and teach this method of self-transcendence. Shat Kriyas (yoga exercises for physical and mental hygiene), Asanas (postures), Pranayamas (breathing exercises), Drishtis (focal points for mental stabilization), Bandhas (panic locks preventing that the gravitational force of earth sucks the life energy), Yoganidrá (deep relaxation leading to accessing our unconscious), Dhyana (meditation) as well as the fascinating work with the chakras, are some of the tools that yoga puts at our disposal. And we will learn how to use them with immediate effect so that you will be able to get the most advantage of surfing, as explained below, as well as in the long-term so that you can learn how to set up a balanced yoga practice which you can use at home to benefit from all advantages which yoga provides.
YOGA and SURF
Surf and Yoga are two disciplines which complement each other. Yoga intensifies the experience in surfing, the relation with the ocean is strengthened, taking the practitioner in total harmony with the cosmic surroundings. Both integrate the practitioner in the nature, bringing him into the present moment, experiencing it with full dedication. The benefits of this interdisciplinarity have been already discovered by the surfing world for quite some time. Gerry Lopez, Cheyne Horan, Tom Curren, Tom Carrol, Teco Padaratz,Taylor Knox, Kelly Slater, Dave "Rasta" Rastovich, Rochelle Ballard, Layne Beachley, Tiago Pires, are just some well-known surfers within the thousands of unknown who have been benefiting from this relationship for a long time now. If surfing and yoga are combined, we achieve an amazing level of energy and vitality, strength, flexibility and confidence - physically and mentally. We devised a special yoga programme for surfers aiming at:
- Improving your physical abilities and body awareness, resulting in a faster improvement on surfing. Equilibrium, flexibility, stretching, rapid reflexes and focused strengthening exercises are the areas on which most of the work will concentrate, also acting in preventing injuries and cramps (yoga resources - asanas).
- Improving lung capacity and breathing by applying ancient yoga techniques. As a natural consequence of increased lung capacity, paddling becomes stronger and faster and confidence levels increase, resulting in more waves picked up per session. Also it's useful in more complicated situations when the ocean decides to show who's in charge, or if your leash breaks (yoga resources - pranayama).
- Visualization, mentalization and relaxation. Visualization and mentalization before surfing are the most efficient ways to make us ride the way we envision. Truly it's a big help for everything in life and a closely guarded secret by the ancient yogues for centuries and centuries. Relaxation enhance the state of deep well-being experienced after surfing, usually called "stoked" and restore the corporal fatigue caused by the ride and the position that we take on the board during the paddling which strains the back, shoulders and neck (yoga resources - yoganidrá, meditation and restorative asanas).

Twenty years of experience in surfing applied to thousands of years of yoga techniques with the power to make you enjoy the surf to the maximum as well as your holiday, enabling you to acquire a useful tool for life, is the proposal of Da Silva Surfcamp and Casa Hanuman.
Enjoy the ride for a life time!
