The city:
Coimbra is a city with the longest academic tradition in Portugal and a visit to the University of Coimbra is a must. Stroll along the famous library and discover the tradition of students' black hoods, marked with tears, each of which mark a huge achievement. Do not forget to visit the National Museum Machado de Castro – the largest Roman building on the Iberian Peninsula, whose premises, located in the upper part of the city, boast Renaissance and Baroque works of art and an interesting collection of porcelain. There are a lot of places of interest to the tourist in the city centre, and the Baixa district located by the River Montego is a labyrinth of fascinating narrow streets full of shops, cafés and churches. Not only the numerous city museums in the city, but also the Roman ruins of Conímbriga are certainly worth visiting. The ruins are located near the town Condeixa-a-Velha. The biggest attraction for children is undoubtedly the Portugal dos Pequeninos theme park where significant historical and cultural landmarks of Portugal have been reproduced as miniatures.
