The people of Atalaia make their living mainly from farming and this is easy to notice in the village. There are a few small cafés, two very good restaurants and a grocery store. Therefore, you do not have to leave the village if you wish to simply relax and rest. For those requiring more, the district town of Lourinha is only 2 km away. You can find banks, a post office, a pharmacy, a hospital and a lot of lovely cafés and restaurants there. Atalaia, a small beautiful village, is a perfect destination for families who like to spend their holiday away from crowded tourist resorts. |

| On the contrary, Praia da Areia Branca is a typical bathing resort of the Portuguese people. Fortunately, there are not many hotels and holiday resorts here yet. Still, in August the beach is crowded and lively as plenty Portuguese people from the surrounding areas come. Typically there are lifeguards on duty, as well as typical beach tents available for a small fee. If you want to get away from this hurly burly, you only need to walk one or two bays further along the beach where you will find a bay just for yourself. |
In Praia da Areia Branca there is a beautiful beach promenade with plenty of small cafés and good restaurants. The town is especially suited for families with teenage children as there is a very nice night life in the resort and getting in touch with the younger generation is easy. Since the express bus from Lisbon to Peniche also stops in Praia da Areia Branca, it is simple to get around without a car. And if you are not up to sitting at a restaurant, there is a daily a market where you can buy fresh fish for a self-prepared barbecue. | |
 Praia da Almagreira | Cabo Carvoeiro, the steep coast north of the port town Peniche, is definitely worth visiting due to its rare and impressive rock formations. From there, you also have a great view on the Berlengas archipelago. You can also visit the islands, taking a trip boat from the port in Peniche. In the old days these islands used to be the base of pirates, and nowadays they have become a popular tourist destination. It is nice to go diving there, since the water is especially clear and there are a lot of beautiful underwater rock grottos to watch. |
The coast around Lisbon has the big advantage of being close to a number of most special cultural attractions of Portugal and at the same time offering wonderful beaches. Sintra is surrounded by numerous estates and lovely woods. The sights of this region include valuable archaeological discoveries, royal estates, churches and chapels of peculiar artistic character. |

Although Lisbon was freed from the Moors by Portugal's first king Afonso Henriques in 1147, its history is more than 2,000 years old. The capital stretches out on the banks of the Tejo, with the river's wide mouth opening towards the Atlantic. Therefore the city played an important role during the journeys of discovery. The walls of the Tower of Belém and the Hieronymus Monastery, both on the World Heritage List, tell us about this golden age of the city.
The eastern part of the city displays its modern side. The architecture of the exhibition grounds where the EXPO '98, the last world exhibition in the 20th century was held, is quite impressive and worth visiting. At night, in the old quarters of the city the streets are filled with sounds of the traditional Fado music and playing guitars. Here you can feel the soul of the Lisbon people resonating. In street cafés, bars and clubs, whose lights are reflected in the Tejo River, the night lasts until early in the morning. |

There is such a concentration of Portuguese culture and history in Lisbon that there is no point trying to list them all here. The best suggestion would be to come and visit and see for yourself. |
The strip of the coast called Costa da Caparica is especially popular with the people of Lisbon. Sesimbra is quite typical of the kind, with its blue bay and a number of traditional fishermen. The green mountains of the Serra D'Arrabida, close to the national park Reserva da Mata Nacional dos Medos, as well as the Cabo Espichel are also worthwhile destinations. They will leave you with an unforgettable impression of the incredible variety of Portuguese nature.
