From the national road IC 4 leading from Sines to Lagos, small gravel roads diverge in the direction of the sea. If you follow these roads, you will get to secluded bays with no living soul there even in the middle of the high season. |
| Vila Nova de Milfontes is picturesquely located near the mouth of the river Mira. It is one of the favourite resorts of Portuguese people. Most of the houses are typically whitewashed in blue and white, except at the riverbank where there is a castle from the 16th century, overgrown with ivy. Since the beaches of Milfontes gently descend to the river, children are fairly safe while swimming. Taking a boat trip up the river is definitely an unforgettable experience. |  |
 | If you like hiking, you will find unique unspoiled nature in the interior of the region. The climate is similar to Algarve, however, the Atlantic has a slight influence on the weather and it is a bit cooler and windier on the beaches. There are also very interesting cities to see up-country, e.g. Evora, with its almost two thousand year old history, Vila Vicosa, the city of the last kings of Portugal, or Beja, where the nun Mariana is buried in a nearby monastery. She used to look out of her window onto the plains and write love letters to a French cavalry captain with whom she was in love. And finally Portalegre, the city in the heart of the national park of Sao Mamede, is worth visiting, too. |
