Lisbon – the capital of Portugal in the mouth of the Tejo River

Enthroned over the right bank of the Tejo River, the legendary city of Lisbon reflects its more than two thousand year old history in the water. As a result of sea voyages of discoverers, Lisbon became one of the most important ports in the world, the central point of the empire that stretched from Brazil on the west to India on the east. Large monuments on the riverbank bear witness of that time.

After the earthquake in 1755, the lower city (Baixa) was rebuilt in the Classical style, though many medieval city districts, hosting numerous restaurants, cafés and shops these days, have been preserved.

The exceptional light in Lisbon, time and time again fascinating writers, photographers and film makers, as well as the variety of colours of Azulejo façades, contribute to the extraordinary atmosphere of the city.

Whether on foot, by tram, by boat on the Tejo River, or by metro, the true underground museum of contemporary Portuguese art – all means of transport are convenient if you wish to discover the cultural diversity of Lisbon.
