Enthroned over the right bank of the Tejo River, the legendary city of Lisbon reflects its more than two thousand year old history in the water. As a result of sea voyages of discoverers, Lisbon became one of the most important ports in the world, the central point of the empire that stretched from Brazil on the west to India on the east. After the earthquake in 1755, the lower city (Baixa) was rebuilt in the Classical style, though many medieval city districts, hosting numerous restaurants, cafés and shops these days, have been preserved.
