Reguengo Grande / the Cezaredas Plateau
Hiking in unspoilt nature The village Reguengo Grande is located on the Cezaredas Plateau. You can find villages such as Casal de Cezaredas and Talefo das Cezaredas here, reminiscent of old Roman settlements. Rock formations that can be found here go back to the Jurassic era. Limestone is nearly the only kind of rock to be seen here and occurs in many places in extensive exposures. One example is Monte do Picoto, which forms a natural extension of the Cezaredas Plateau. Yet not only prehistoric traces can be found in this area. Also the Romans, who inhabited Portugal from the 2nd to the 5th century, and the invasions of Napoleon's troops (battle of Rolica) left their traces here. The historical heritage involves caves, old settlements, wind and water mills, bridges, churches and wells. Due to its rocky surface and thicket vegetation, the area is barely used for agricultural purposes. Only a few herds of goats and sheep graze here. Windmills, present in most of the villages, are usually solid stonework. Some of them are still in operation.
Rural museum of Reguengo Grande In 1989, the Rural Museum of Reguengo Grande (Museu Rural do Reguengo Grande) was founded. There is a collection of agricultural implements and various objects that have to do with the ethnography of the area. The museum is located on the premises of the Reguengo Grande municipality, where you can also find an olive squeezer, five art handicraft shops, a children's playground and a picnic park.
